Georg Jensen - 2006 Cufflinks collections

Georg Jensen relaunches 1960s cufflinks by renowned Danish designers.

At the forefront of design innovation in jewellery, watches and hollowware for over 100 years, Georg Jensen has launched many of the world’s iconic pieces and contributed to defining many design eras. Products long forgotten by time are often rediscovered in the enormous archive of design treasures Georg Jensen’s many artists have created over the years. This year we rediscover a treasure trove of cufflinks which by nature of their function never go out of fashion for either men or women.

In 1963, Magnus Steffensen designed a fun collection of cufflinks in sterling silver which incorporated the use of primary enamel colours to enliven the traditional shape with colourful contrast. Steffensen was a member of the functionalist school of design of the 1950s and 1960s who stripped back design to the bare elements of form and beauty with very little adornment. Geometric shapes were often a key element of functionalist design which Magnus Steffensen has employed here with squares, set in an engaging perspective, and dots that exude a feeling of free expression.

The Magnus Steffensen cufflinks in sterling silver are square in their form and come in two versions. The MOSAIC collection with enamel squares in black, brown and blue versions also the DOMINO collection with enamel dots in black; red, white and blue; and a multi-coloured version.

Two other legendary Danish designers, Nanna Ditzel and Søren Georg Jensen also designed cufflinks during this retro period. Nanna Ditzel’s abstract, rectangular sterling silver cufflinks with black centre line are representative of her understated design language. Søren Georg Jensen’s simple pipe- shaped cufflinks in 18 carat gold stand out for their functional, yet elegant style.
